Last redesigned for the 2011 model year, optima still looks contemporary. This engine is short on excitement, but it's fine for most drivers. Quiet at highway cruising speeds, it delivers enough power to keep up with fast traffic on the freeways, while delivering an epa-estimated 24/35 mpg city/highway. All 2013 optima models come standard with a 6-speed automatic. kia optima sx features a peppy 2. 0-liter turbocharged engine. The turbocharged inline-4 found on the optima sx sweetly carries this sedan into another world. With 274 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, the optima sx boasts first-rate performance, stability and agility. Silky smooth, the turbocharged engine propels the optima sx from 0 to 60 in 6. 5 seconds, quick for this class. The front air dam is low enough to scrape in surprising places for a so-called sedate sedan like this, and gives the nose an aggressive look while helping fuel mileage. Still, the imagery is enticing. interioroptima's interior concedes nothing to its european or american competitors, except for its black plastic trim. The dashboard uses pebble-grain black leather, handsomely stitched with french seams. Instruments use a clear font. It tilts and telescopes, and contains controls for audio, cruise control, phone and a big green button for eco. Heating is optional. the five-passenger seating is excellent, with a full range of adjustability available in the driver's seat. The seats are firm, well-bolstered, and deliver snug lateral support for more vigorous driving. However, the center-rear passenger must ride the camel's hump, and the rear legroom is on the low side of average, at 34. 7 inches. Heated front and rear seating is available, as is front cooling and a cooled glovebox for drinks. the panoramic sunroof, on cars so equipped, is huge, airy and truly bright. When closing it, the sunscreen panel closes automatically. A separate function opens only the screen and tilt roof.

Similarly, the rear passenger doors extend back over the wheel housing to optimize access to third-row seats. the sorento's shape is more than just a pretty face; it slips through the air at highway speed with minimal wind noise. And sure enough, there is gray simulated-wood trim, not the real thing, in the driver's compartment. But to deliver good value, kia goes for simple but handsome fixtures. The controls and switchgear are of high quality, with good tactile feel. This lacked some of the more sophisticated onscreen visual aids for backing while turning, as found on some premium crossovers. Similar units in some other vehicles light automatically upon being opened. we found the driver's seat, with eight-way power adjustment and lumbar support, to be excellent, firm, supportive, confidence-inspiring. The right front seat, however, is adjusted manually. the second-row bench seat was comfortable, though even with the front seat well forward, second-row legroom was so-so. But then, this is not a large suv and kia has achieved no spatial miracles. On the other hand, the company says a 6-foot, 7-inch nba player can drive the sorento in full comfort. the third-row seats are a bit of a compromise, as they are in any but the most grandiose three-row vehicles. Tilt-folding the second-row seats forward to access the rear involves a bit of calisthenics, as the seats are fairly heavy. Once the unlucky, last-row galley slaves are in place and the second-row seats slam down and lock, the latches are hard to release and fold forward from the rear row. Headroom in the far rear is minimal, as well. The climate control worked flawlessly, offering strong volume when requested. And the rear roof-mounted dvd screen, which pops down behind the two front bucket seats, should provide plenty of amusement for those with nothing to do. Finally, with all seats folded down, maximum cargo volume is 72. 5 cubic feet, a massive improvement over the previous model. driving impressionwe're used to kias being small, cheap and cheerful, and this suv is certainly cheerful, in a roomy, upscale way. The new unibody construction isolates engine vibration well. Moving away from the curb onto choppy pavement, the structure again proves its worth, having excellent sound damping and an impressive feeling of sturdiness. the macpherson-strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension are nicely tuned to muffle and damp pavement irregularities the vehicle is passing over. On smooth curves when driving a bit more aggressively, this crossover feels decently agile and easy to control. Much of this is thanks to kia's firm, spot-on steering effort. Steering is power-assisted but requires the driver to make forthright moves to left or right, there's no light-headed wandering or numbness of any kind. This no-nonsense steering feel will prove invaluable when making an emergency accident-avoidance mane.

Updated and re-engineered for a smoother ride. introductionkia sorento benefits from a major update for the 2014 model year. Technically, the 2014 sorento represents a mid-cycle freshening; the previous generation made its appearance for the 2011 model year. But even though the kia marketing people refrain from employing the term all-new, the 2014 sorento rolls into showrooms with a list of revisions that's much more extensive than the usual facelift. All told, kia reckons the sorento's new or re-engineered content at 80 percent. the 2014 kia sorento benefits from cosmetic updates front and rear, a new v6 engine option, a chassis sufficiently re-engineered to be characterized as new, a new electric steering system, a number of suspension revisions, improved braking, upgraded interior appointments, and new infotainment and telematics. like every vehicle in this class, the sorento is a unibody design, basically front-wheel drive with an all-wheel drive option. although it continues to offer the smaller sportage, kia targets the sorento against the compact crossover crowd, where it has a size advantage. The kia sorento is substantially bigger than the honda cr-v, ford escape, mazda cx-5, and toyota rav4. Sorento's larger size pays roominess dividends. the 2014 sorento continues to offer the option of a three-row, seven-passenger configuration. However, adding the third row consumes a bit of cargo space and continues to be very snug in terms of third-row leg room. Kia and mitsubishi are now the only players in this segment to offer a third-row option. We think sorento is better as a two-row, five-passenger vehicle. the 2014 sorento's new v6 engine is a rare option in this class. The mitsubishi outlander is the only competitor with a v6 option. Kia's 3. 3-liter v6 uses direction injection to produce 290 horsepower, 252 pound-feet. The new 3. 3-liter v6 replaces the previous 3. 5-liter v6. Fuel economy for the 3. 3-liter v6 is an epa-estimated 18/25 mpg city/highway, 18/24 mpg with all-wheel drive. It comes with a 6-speed automatic. Although the v6 option adds $1600 to the bottom line, it doesn’t carry much of a fuel economy penalty, especially when all-wheel drive is ordered. structural improvements to the 2014 sorento include what kia calls an all-new chassis, with a subframe supporting the strut front suspension, stiffened front strut towers, larger bushings in the multilink rear suspension, and a higher percentage of high strength steel throughout the bodyshell. Kia engineers cite an 18 percent increase in torsional rigidity, an area of chassis construction where more is always better, contributing to more precise handling and first rate crashworthiness. There are positives and negatives associated with this positioning.
